Nature needs more supporters

Are you passionate about protecting nature and wildlife? Do you enjoy being outdoors and sharing nature experiences with others? In the class “Biology and the joy of nature”, you will get to explore the fascinating life in forests, freshwater, mountains, and the ocean. The program combines species knowledge, nature management, biological adventures, and genuine enjoyment of nature—without the pressure of exams. You don’t need any prior experience with biology or outdoor life, just an interest in nature.
Nature is our biggest ally and greatest inspiration

Explore nature and wildlife
Throughout the year, you will learn about species within various groups of fungi, plants, and animals; which groups we focus on will depend both on you and your class. We will explore the many fascinating and ingenious strategies different species use to survive and reproduce. We will also examine the remarkable ways that species interact in nature.
You will also learn how different species have been connected to humans, for example as food, medicine, in traditions and myths. You will become skilled at foraging for food in nature and picking up fun and quirky facts along the way 🙂
Some of the things you will learn and experience
- Species knowledge – everything from moss to whales
- Learn to identify trees, bird songs, and animal tracks
- Help map rare and endangered species
- Forage for algae, mushrooms, and edible plants, and cook outdoors
- Snorkel in kelp forests among fish and anemones
- Stay in a lighthouse, surrounded by seabirds and the sea
- Canoe trips along the coast
- Bird banding and luring
- Find peace in botanical gardens and by the campfire
- Communicate nature through, for example, film, photography and creative galleries.
- Nature management – contribute to protecting species

Who is this program for?
- The course is open to everyone, regardless of prior knowledge.
- Those who consider further studies in biology or nature management and who want to try themselves as field biologist.
- Those who want to continue in a completely different direction but wish to become more familiar with nature
- Those who want to relax and enjoy moments in nature together with others
- Those who want to do something meaningful for nature and wildlife
- Those who enjoy being outdoors
- Those who want to forage food from nature and learn about traditional use
- Those who are curious about the world

Discover nature in practice
Throughout the year, we will spend a lot of time outdoors in beautiful nature, allowing you to learn where nature actually happens. This way, biology becomes concrete and alive, and you get to use your mind, your hands, and your senses. There will also be creative work indoors, so that the classroom can evolve into a botanical and zoological museum over the course of the year. The teaching will be varied and flexible, and you will have the opportunity to work both independently and together with others.
Some of the most rewarding experiences I know come from helping create meaningful moments that bring us closer to nature, to other species, to each other, and to ourselves.

Valuable and rewarding knowledge

Today, many of our species are threatened, and we need more knowledge if we are to take care of nature. Since knowledge of species has become increasingly rare, you will gain expertise that is both uncommon and important. You will learn about nature management and ecological restoration—such as removing Pacific oysters to help kelp forests, building nesting sites for sand martins , or creating insect-friendly flower meadows. You will also have the opportunity to participate in surveys of rare and threatened species—for example, through bat- and snake monitoring, butterfly safaris, owl tours, explorations of old-growth forests, and birdwatching trips along the coast.

Study trip to Costa Rica
Here, we will learn about species in tropical rainforests, mangrove forests, coastal landscapes, and the ocean. The program includes visits to a national park, birdwatching trips with local guides, and snorkeling in crystal-clear blue waters among colorful fish and corals.
Trip to Hovden
Here we will learn about mountain ecology and how species adapt to life in the mountains.
There will also be time for cozy cabin moments with good food, plenty of sweets and hot chocolate, a fireplace, and a big autumn celebration where we decorate the cabin in beautiful fall colors.

Teacher Hi!
Hi! My name is Torunn, and I’m an enthusiastic biologist with a passion for sharing the wonders of nature. Some of the most rewarding moments I know come from helping create meaningful experiences that bring us closer to nature, to other species, and to one another.
Q&A Frequent questions
No, interest is all you need.
Except for certain activities (like canoeing and mountain hikes), you don’t need to be in particularly good physical shape. In any case, we move at a biology pace—which is not known for being fast.
Those who wish can receive support, equipment, and guidance to take online exams in bird identification and/or bird sounds (up to 30 credits). You can also get help to take exams in fungi and/or useful plants, becoming a certified fungi and/or useful plants expert. These courses can be a great addition to your CV if you want to continue in the field of biology.
