Norwegian students
Norwegian applicants fill out the application form. You will quickly receive confirmation that we have received your application. Admission to Norwegian folk high schools begins on November 15. At that time, you will receive a prompt reply regarding whether you have been offered a place. If you apply after November 15, applications are processed on an ongoing basis. We continue admitting students until the start of the school year or until the school/program is full. Please also read the school’s admission criteria.
As a Norwegian citizen, you are entitled to loans and grants from statens lånekasse (the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund).
International students
Student from the EU/EEA
As a student from the EU/EEA, you usually do not need a study residence permit before arrival. Instead, you must register with the police after arrival if you plan to stay in Norway for more than six months. The school will assist you with this once you have arrived.
Students who need a visa
Students who come from countries outside the EU/EEA must apply for a student residence permit before travelling to Norway.
- When you have applied as a student and been offered a place, you must pay the specified amount. This sum includes both tuition and pocket money. The school will then send you an admission letter confirming that you have a study place, sufficient funds for your stay in Norway, and accommodation for the duration of your stay.
- After being admitted
Now you should apply for a visa. You will need your admission letter from the school as a document for your visa application. - Submit an application with UDI
You use UDI’s online portal (“Application Portal Norway”) to apply for a residence permit. - Submit documents at the embassy/consulate
After submitting your application, you will often need to provide the physical documents (originals or certified copies) to the nearest Norwegian embassy or VFS center. - Wait for processing
Processing times may vary. Some schools recommend applying as soon as possible to ensure that your permit is granted before the start of your studies.
- Upon arrival, the school will organize the rest, including your residence card.
- If your visa application is rejected, all tuition fees will be refunded to the account from which the payment was made.
Important tips and advice
You should apply as early as possible, as processing times can vary.
Remember health insurance: Depending on your country of origin, you may need private health insurance, or you may be able to use a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), etc. Check with UDI to see what requirements apply to you.

Follow UDI’s official website: Rules may change, so check UDI (The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) for the latest requirements.
