Oslo – The Capitol of Norway

We travel to Oslo at the end of November, just as the Christmas season begins, and stay in the heart of the city. During our visit, we explore the Parliament, the Nobel Peace Prize Centre, the National Theatre, and the Munch Museum, and we also attend The Nutcracker ballet at the Opera House, among many other activities.

The days are busy but full of fun. We often adjust the program based on the students’ interests and what’s happening in Oslo at the time. While there are a few places we always visit, we create much of the program together.

The activities vary widely — from theatre and opera to visiting a local pub, making chocolate at Freia, joining art workshops, ice skating, or even taking a winter swim. And if we’re lucky with the weather, there’s always the chance for some sledding in the snow.

Pre-Christmas Trip to Oslo – A Week Dedicated to Art

At the turn of November–December, we embark on a week-long pre-Christmas trip to Oslo, where we truly dive into the world of art. At the same time, we experience a variety of cultural expressions and activities.

The trip begins with a visit to Emanuel Vigeland’s mausoleum, where we will experience a very special concert in this unique building. Next, we visit both Einar Granum and Strykejernet Art Schools, where we will get guided tours and insight into the schools’ creative environments. We will also stop by KEM – the artists’ own art supply store – and perhaps you’ll be tempted by some new equipment or materials to bring back to Agder.

We go “all in” at the major museums: Astrup Fearnley, Munch, the National Museum, and Henie Onstad Art Center. In addition, we get to know several of Oslo’s most important contemporary art venues, such as Kunstnernes Hus, Kunstnerforbundet, Norske Grafikere, Tegnerforbundet, LNM, Format – and more.

Of course, we also make time to stroll the streets and enjoy pre-Christmas coziness in the capital. We’ll catch the Christmas production at the National Theatre and see the ballet The Nutcracker – the traditional Christmas performance at the Opera.

Through this trip, you’ll get to know Oslo as a city of art and culture, experiencing it in a completely new way. At the same time, you’ll gain insight into what it means to continue your studies in the arts. Many former Agder students have chosen this path, and some of them will meet us along the way. They’ll share their experiences, thoughts, and helpful advice about further education in the arts – making it both useful and enjoyable to connect with former Agder students.

We travel together with the NLC class and have both shared activities and individual programs along the way.
